What I’m Cooking, Drinking, And Watching This Weekend
by Dave
What I’m Cooking
I don’t really want to step outside this weekend. I’ll have to at some point, as there’s a pool party my kid’s invited to, but as I type this, the desire to go out on the deck in the peak heat of summer down here sounds terrible. I can’t really complain, as we’ve had summers that were much more hellish, but I don’t know if I have it in me this weekend. Sweaty, drenched in hickory smoke, and going back and forth to my kitchen while my youngest demands he walk outside with me each time. Ah hell, let’s cook a tri-tip or something. Stay tuned.
What I’m Drinking
My fridge is hilarious right now. We’ve got Coors Light, Modelo, High Noon, and Sun Cruisers. I have never had a Sun Cruiser and have no idea why there are two in my fridge, but they’re there. I have options. I also have an unopened bottle of Renieri (my go-to), and a liquor cabinet that punches well above its weight. There are options. I could see me opening some grape and clearing a bottle or not having a drop all weekend. Given that we’ve got high-level PPV boxing Saturday night, we might keep it grimy and mash some Coors Lights.
What I’m Watching
The Agency
I missed this show dearly. You put The Fass in a role depicting an effective, yet complicated, CIA operative, he is going to deliver. Season 2 picks up right where we left off in season 1, but now we’ve got major trust issues in the station. Is there a little CIA propaganda being shoved down my throat? Sure, but I’ll take that as long as I get a proper gander at Michael Fassbender delicately balancing his personal life with his work life.
Chef Emeril Clips
You know the vibes:
Spence-Tszyu
My man Errol has been on the shelf for three years following his brutal first defeat at the hands of Bud Crawford. Since then, a lot of people have jumped off the bandwagon, but not me. I have some concerns, but a fight in Tim Tszyu’s backyard might be exactly what he needs to get going again. I mean, he’s lost one time! To the goat! Give him a break.
Earlybird CBD Gummies & Drops
The last few nights leading up to yesterday, I’ve had trouble going to sleep and staying asleep. A busy week with some big news has had my mind racing and it’s kept me up. I finally decided to do something about it.
I took an Earlybird gummy last night at 8:30. I got into bed at 9:30. And by 10:00 I had reached maximum comfort level as Earlybird was doing what Earlybird does. A subtle high mixed with total relaxation is the perfect recipe for a good night of sleep. A solid eight hours was just what the doctor ordered. Needed it.
It was a gummy night for me, which is still my favorite. Drops are great, too, if that’s more your style. Drops is a hemp-derived, water soluble tincture formulated with a Feel Good balance of THC and CBD. Just like the gummies, each serving of Drops contains ~2.5mg of THC and ~12.5mg of CBD.
Drops are water soluble, meaning they can seamlessly be mixed with any beverage
Drops contain ZERO Calories and ZERO Sugar
The “Dropper” format allows you to “fine-tune” the right dose for the right moment
Earlybird Drops are unflavored and have a tart and earthy taste - just like the plant they are made from
Right now at EarlybirdCBD.com, you can purchase the Drops or the gummies for 20% OFF your order with Code “WASHED.” This is a single use code so load up your cart.
11 Things I’ve Been Consuming This Summer
by Will
Summer used to be a season that I held in the highest regard. With perfect weather striking Northern Michigan at the perfect time, you could feel the seasonal depression leaving your body when the calendar hit June 1st.
Unfortunately, after moving to Texas, I no longer enjoy summer. It’s supposed to be 111° in Austin today. That’s a whole different version seasonal depression, so here’s everything I’ve been consuming to distract myself lately.
Country Life Vlog — Last night I watched an old woman make rustic flatbread for like a half-hour. It was electric. I have no idea why I’ve become so entranced by this random family’s YouTube page but I’m pretty sure I need to move to the Qusar region of Azerbaijan at some point in my life.
Jeni’s Double Dough Ice Cream — A Backer recently claimed that if everyone at Washed Media was designated with an ice cream flavor, I’d be some Talenti sorbetto bullshit. Little does everyone realize, I’m the ice cream guy ‘round these parts. So much so that I had to drop a, “Maybe we should space out how much Double Dough we’re buying” the other night.
Brooks Falls Brown Bears (Watch Here) — The bears have been going off on the live stream this year. Probably the best year for the Brooks Falls Brown Bears that I’ve ever seen.
Grateful Dead live in Nassau, 3/29/90 (Listen Here) — A show that I love for many reasons has recently found itself squarely back in the rotation. A heavy “Jack Straw” opener? Branford Marsalis taking the stage for the best “Birdsong” ever performed? An absolutely ripping “Throwing Stones” with Branford still onstage? Have mercy.
Love Island UK — Real ones know that Love Island USA will never actually compare to its predecessor, UK. This year, I’ve never been more positive that I made the correct decision to stay on that side of the pond. Yes, I’m #TeamLorenzo and #TeamJasmine. Yes, I believe they should be together. No, I will not be finishing the season now that all the bombshells have come in.
Books — In an effort to un-rot my brain in between Love Island episodes and World Cup matches, I’ve been reading a lot lately. The summer reading list includes (but is not limited to) Stoner, A Moveable Feast, The Remains of the Day, Yuppies, A Month in the Country, and From Scenes Like These. Yes, it’s helped my overall mental health this summer.
Freshly Baked Bread — If your wife (or partner of any sort) ever decides they want to get into making sourdough, nudge them in that direction as hard as you possibly can. I have gained five pounds this summer because of all the fresh sourdough, focaccia, and white bread that’s been around. That weight gain has nothing to do with the aforementioned ice cream, I promise.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight for PS5 — Behind my back, my son added the new Lego Batman game to our cart on my Playstation. Because I accidentally purchased it, we’ve had no choice but to play it. I must say, what a game. It’s like Grand Theft Auto but with Batman characters and zero hookers. Highly recommend.
“The Valley Road” by Bruce Hornsby and The Range (Listen Here) — Dare I say… song of the summer? A massive hat tip to Dave for playing the opening notes to this in the office recently, thus reminding me how hard this song actually goes. If it isn’t my most-played song by summer’s end, then it’s probably “Tell Your Mates You Love Them” by EV.
Not Enough Water, Apparently? — Got my blood tested recently after switching doctors and she said I need to “start drinking way more water.” While I’ve taken that advice to heart, I haven’t exactly been putting it into practice as much as I should. Ten years ago, I was glugging like 120 ounces per day. Time to get back to that version of myself. Take a sip of the water bottle on your desk right now if you’re reading this.
Dock Deals on Instagram — While I have zero desire to ever own a boat, I do enjoy spending my free time imagining myself absolutely cruising the lake in one of these things. Like can you IMAGINE how sick it would be to pull up to Ski Shores in the mahogany jet ski? Especially if “The Valley Road” is blasting on the JBL.
What’ve you been grinding on this summer? Come on, put me on to something.
Welp
by Dillon
Welp, we’re having a baby. I know I’ve been logging numerous big life events lately which may seem like I’m trying to keep the spotlight on me. Having a platform like Circling Back where we share parts of our lives with all of you makes it pretty unavoidable. This is the last one, though, I promise.
As a father to a close-to-perfect 11-year-old son from a previous marriage, my stance on having any more kids had stayed the same over the years. And it’s been this: I was content as is. If I hadn’t had any more children, I’d have been okay with that. I’ve gotten to be a dad these last 11 years and it’s brought me immense joy and fulfillment, more than I could ever hope for. Plus I was finished changing diapers, which was sick.
However, if I had met and fell in love with someone who was sure they wanted to bring a baby into this world with me, I could easily get on board with that. Because I love it. I love being a father. Raising my son has brought meaning to everything I do, and everything I’m about. You hear people talk about their “purpose” on this earth. I used to struggle with that concept, probably because I struggled identifying mine. Then I sort of realized I was searching too deeply for the answer to that question.
Being a dad is, what I feel, my purpose. In a world that will forever need more good humans in it, one in which the supply of kindness and empathy will always fall short of the demand for them, I can tell you with great confidence that I’m already raising one more good one, and now we get to bring another one into it.
Some time late last summer, Chelsea, not yet my wife at the time, told me she wanted to try for a kid. I was finally faced with the situation I honestly doubted would ever come. After a couple days of pondering and imagining life with a newborn as a 43-year-old, I not only embraced that challenging phase of parenting, I looked beyond to the wonderful years that would follow. I was fully onboard.
It’s been so long since I’ve done all the newborn stuff so I’ve purchased a book to get my bearings again. It’s like riding a bike, though, right? I’ll need to re-learn how to swaddle and secure a car seat, and I’ll have to read about the feeding and sleeping schedules of a newborn, which I’ve totally forgotten at this point. Raising a son, though? I got that shit down. Being Parks’ dad has been the greatest experience, and I think I’m pretty solid at it.
Parks is pretty excited. He was in Amsterdam with his mom when we got the gender results back so we connected with him on FaceTime the next morning to let him know he was getting a baby brother. He lit up.
He might not have realized this yet, but Parks is going to be logging some serious babysitting hours in a few years.
Chelsea was born to be a mom. The way she’s embraced Parks in her life made that clear to me from the beginning.
I don’t really know why I’m writing this or what it was I wanted to say when I started. I guess it’s more of a journal entry that I’ll get to look back on when the little gets bigger. It got way sappier than I had intended. Sorry. Life is great, though. I’m happy. And I can’t wait for my second son to enter this world in January.
