She’s Beautiful
Last week I announced I was taking on a fun little project and would be restoring my old high school baseball glove. I didn’t expect to be able to show you all the finished product just a week later, but I ran into fewer problems than I anticipated.
As a reminder, here’s what she looked like a week ago.
The game plan was simple: I’d be conditioning the leather and completely relacing it. I chose tan lacing to give it a little more pop. Good choice, Dillon.
Step 1: Removing the old lacing
After removing all the lacing, which was pretty easy, I used a leather conditioner on it. A little TLC for a glove that hadn’t been shown any in 24 years. The leather was dry and cracking at parts.
Step 2: Thumb and pinky first
No problems here. The YouTube tutorial I watched was helpful, but the leather itself tells you a story. You can see the wear lines from where the laces used to be, so if you follow those, it’s hard to misstep. The lacing on the palm was a bit more challenging since you have to find the existing holes on the inside, but we got there fairly quickly.
Step 3: Lacing the heel
This is where the process got fun as it started to come to life a bit. Each step was more challenging than the one before. Y’all know that tan on dark brown looking strong.
Step 4: The webbing
There is where I nearly made a mistake that was going to cost me a lot of time and having to purchase more lacing. What I didn’t realize until I finished the webbing and started on the fingers is this entire section is done with one piece of lacing. The pack I bought included four different laces, each about four feet long.
Starting at the top left of the webbing, the spiral design around the top, then all way until the tip of the pinky is all one continuous lace. It left me about one inch to spare at the very end. Had I known that when I began this section, I wouldn’t have left so much slack at the jump. Anyway, I got lucky and it worked out.
And here she is. A real beauty.
Parks has a game tonight. Can’t wait to flash the new leather.

What I’m Cooking, Drinking, And Watching This Weekend
by Dave
What I’m Cooking
Here’s what I can tell you definitively: I have a 2-year-old who will only eat breakfast tacos for breakfast, and a 5-year-old who is stuck on waffles. So I know for sure that’s on the agenda. I can’t complain about my kids eating food, but we’re mowing through eggs in this house at a rapid clip. I’m also pretty sure these waffles aren’t offering a ton of high-level macronutrients. I once tried to give him some protein waffles which he promptly swatted out of the gym. No respect for muscle mass with this generation. Shaking my head.
As for the exciting stuff like a pork butt, tri-tip, chicken parm, or something cool? I’ve got no clue. I really look forward to a Friday grocery store run with no plan other than figuring out dinner. Someone send me something cheap and easy for the pellet smoker. My DMs are open for meat recommendations.
What I’m Drinking
I’m man enough to admit when I’m wrong. That won’t happen here, because this is more of an oversight, albeit glaring, in my beverage repertoire. I’m now officially on the Negra Modelo bandwagon. I panic-bought a sixer a couple weekends ago at the gas station based only on vibes. I got recruited by the Modelo Recruiter. He found an old resume of mine in his database and reached out with an opportunity- an opportunity to drink ice cold Modelo beers after my kids go to bed. For whatever reason, I’ve always played it safe and ordered the Especial whenever given choice. It’s a fine beer that pairs well with most daytime drinking activities, but I’m digging the dark lager these days. I rarely drink during the day anyway. I’d never even heard the word “darty” until 2016. In my day, we called it day drinking. No need to class it up.
What I’m Watching
I’d love to watch a bunch of 5-year-olds hit baseballs off a tee, honestly. Weather permitting, I guess. My kid’s team is looking to make a playoff run after a first round exit last season. It’s double elimination, and we’re 1-1. If we can make it through Saturday, we’ll have a quick turnaround with a game on Mother’s Day. What mom wouldn’t want to spend her big day watching a 20-20 tie that’s decided on outs? It’s your day, babe. I’ll be right over here with my arms over the fence muttering to myself as the teenage umpire let’s the other team’s center fielder make a force out at second. It’s just a game! Having fun.
But this group of lads is starting to gel. They’re actually asking what the score is during the game, and my son didn’t cry when he found out he wouldn’t get to bat because they’d reached the run limit. They care! The squad’s getting hot at the right time. No matter how this thing ends, we’ve surpassed our win total from last season (zero), and a kid hit for the cycle a couple weeks ago. That’s a success in my book.
