Let’s See How It’s Going On The PGP Subreddit
by
For those unaware, and by this point, that’s likely very few of you, Dave, Will, and I used to work for a media company that owned the editorial site postgradproblems.com, as well as the socials associated with it. Readers of the site frequented the PGP subreddit to discuss the articles we posted and the podcasts we recorded under the name Touching Base. That website is no longer active and the podcast was canceled.
This was nearly six years ago.
The subreddit, r/PostGradProblem, lives on, however. Its contents are no longer about the now defunct website or podcast, but the same people who used to frequent the page still visit it. It’s just that now they’re assholes who don’t start threads, but only comment on them.
The entertaining part is that the topics are created by unknowing people who are seeking earnest advice and commentary from like minded people about life after college. Some common themes you might find: adjusting to living in a new city, career paths to choose, whether grad school is the right path, and making friends as a mid-twenties postgrad.
I did one of these a few months back and it seemed like a hit. I don’t know if I was expecting the activity on this page to slow down or the advice to become more sincere, but what did happen was that it encouraged more people to comment on the posts.
Below are some very real thread topics that I’ll highlight for your amusement, so let’s throw another couple logs on this fire and keep the fun going until people catch on. And judging by literally all the threads that arise each week, that’s not happening anytime soon.
Post grad cognitive slump fix
I only graduated in May but I've definitely gotten dumber post grad. I'm trying to study for the LSAT or the GRE. Does anyone have any recommendations to get back the mental sharpness and quickness that I used to have?
Honestly, the first comment isn’t the worst idea. A little nicotine added to the bloodstream can get you dialed in to study. The advice sort of devolves from there, though. I’m trying to look at this from all angles, but I simply don’t see how buying a Mazda Miata or a plot of land in west Texas will help this person pass the LSAT.
While hydration is important, accomplishing it via horse electrolytes might not the be the smartest or safest way of going about it. Might I suggest water and perhaps a Liquid IV? And I certainly would not recommend chugging 40 ounces of malt liquor plus a Four Loko and slamming the glass bottle into pavement before hitting the books. Not sure you’ll retain all the information!
Making friends postgrad
I graduated in May and moved back home. Still looking for work and what not (usual postgrad things) but I’m finding it hard to make friends with people my age especially in the area I live in. I talk to my college friends but we don’t see each other as often due to location. So, here I am on Reddit lol. How do you make friends as an adult ?😃 Thanks in advance!
You’ll notice that the suggestion of tossing in a fat hooter (nicotine pouch) is a major player in this subreddit, be it for studying, making friends, or anything really.
Joining a fraternity or sorority is definitely a great way to cast a wide social net and make a bunch of friends quickly, but I don’t think that this person, who, if you’ll remember, has graduated from college and moved away from their college town, has any Greek life eligibility left.
Am I the asshole
Am I the asshole for not wanting to go to my colleges reunion weekend. It’s coming up and it would be my first one. It’s at this crummy bar in my school’s town and I just don’t want to go… is this normal is this weird?
Don’t bail on your frat, dude. That’s not a good look, especially if Vortex bottles are in play. Don’t worry, though, because your girl is apparently going to have a good time there whether you go or not. She might go home with Ole Gene, though.
Side note: Are college reunions really a thing?
Question about Masters
Hi, I graduated from a decent university with a second upper honours in Economics in 2017. Unfortunately, my career hasn't quite gone the way I wanted it to. Since then, I've only got around 4+ years experience in an Admin role for a small company. There are also considerable gaps in my resume due to personal issues. I've passed CFA level 1 & 2 and FRM part 1 & 2, but have no relevant work experience. It is also difficult to get internships at this stage, as I am 30. So, I am considering getting a Masters degree in Finance or Business Analytics / Data Science. As a student, I might be able to get opportunities to network and get internships. I took the GMAT and got a decent score (740). I also have enough funds to do a full time degree. However, most universities require references, which is where I have issues. I cannot use my current employer, as they will not be happy that I'm planning to leave / make a career switch. It's the only company I've worked at. Additionally, it's been 7 years since I graduated, and to be honest, I wasn't a very memorable student. So, I was wondering if anyone had some advice for me:
Is a masters degree going to help me make a career switch?
Are there any decent universities / programs that do not require references?
Again with the frat rec. I mean, it is a great way to network. And yeah, Texas State probably is a school that wouldn’t require references, as it’s not exactly an esteemed institution.
While the wait staff at Mattle Rancho’s probably makes a decent living, serving sizzling fajitas and knockout martinis isn’t exactly the career path this person has been working towards for many years. If all else fails, throw in a fat ass dip and acquire generational wealth via BTS investments.
Masters in Luxury Brand Management
I just graduated and I’m confused what to do next. I know I want to stay in the fashion and lifestyle industry but I’ve heard their salaries are mediocre at max. I was planning to do masters in Luxury Brand Management and was looking into institutes. Any suggestions? (Of not blankly pocking ripping colleges) Besides, Is that worth or should I do masters in something else (not pursuing any from of masters degree is not allowed) And, are there any other careers in similar field where I can keep my pride but even make good money?
Frats, fat hooters, BTS investing, and Ole Gene working his way up the hardware store corporate ladder. Never change, people of r/PostGradProblem.

It’s Spooky SZN
by David
Since the inception of Washed Media, the month of October has always been a special one. Central Texas fall allergies ruining us for weeks, weddings conflicting with college football, and reading your ghost stories that have far exceeded the level of scary we thought was possible on a podcast. This October will be no different.
My interest in the paranormal dates back to childhood. Every summer, our family would load up our car and drive from DFW to Niagara Falls, New York. As if that’s not scary enough, we would sometimes stop and stay overnight in… Ohio. One particular night, I vividly remember waking up in our hotel room in the middle of the night and watching a ball of light creep across the room. I know it wasn’t headlights because this thing moved straight and slow like a little fireball burning across a long fuse. Whatever it was, it didn’t really scare me, and I definitely didn’t think to mention it to anyone. But I know it happened, dammit.
My other experience went down in college at our now bulldozed frat house. Up one weeknight after a long day of wearing 5 inch seam khakis shorts and being a dickhead, my silent bedroom was suddenly filled with the sound of music being played from an old-time radio. It’s hard to describe, but think Hank Williams era country in super low quality with static behind it. It was as if we were on the outskirts of an AM radio signal. The lady I was with at the time looked at me, just as confused as I was, as the song seemed to engulf the part of the room we occupied. It was right on top of us. Not off in the distance, and definitely not from another room in the house. The house was old, but other than a lazy tale about a scorned girlfriend who hung herself in one of the rooms, there were never any substantive supernatural stories. Alumni loved to make shit up. It’s a real right of passage.
Those are my two, and those wouldn’t even make the cut for Spooky Szn. Some of the wild ass stories listeners have sent in are still talked about around the office. Some of them have even been memorialized by Producer Randy while he was in his animation era:
What the hell? We said it on the show, but there’s no way I’m sticking around for another night in that house. I’m pulling up with a priest and a fat ass spliff laced with sage before I put my head on that pillow again.
As you’re gearing up for Halloween, join us on patreon for new episodes every Tuesday and check out the entire Spooky Szn back catalog while you’re at it. We have a lot of fun doing it, and we’d love a chance to earn your business. Look out for Spooky Szn merch too.
